The call for student applications for the John & Pat Hume Doctoral Scholarship Awards is now open
 and prospective students can apply until 11:45 pm (GMT)on Friday, 23rd January 2026 .

It is important that prospective applicants read all supporting Hume documentation before making an application.

Established in honour of John Hume, an alumnus of Maynooth University, and in recognition of his important contribution to Ireland, the John & Pat Hume Doctoral Awards are offered across all disciplines at Maynooth University.

The annual four year scholarship offers a €25,000 stipend, €2,000 research expenses plus EU fees each year.  Successful non-EU applicants may apply for a non-EU fee waiver.

Note: Supervisors can only supervise a Hume student if they have submitted an Expression of Interest with general research areas in which they will accept applicants.  Prospective applicants can only apply for a Hume scholarship in the Supervisor Research Areas advertsied. Applicants must contact their selected MU supervisor to discuss their application.  Applicants must upload an academic reference from the MU supervisor to complete an eligible application.
