About the Job:
- To assess patients with foot problems, diagnosing and planning appropriate treatment and taking into account such factors as patient health and social circumstances, likely compliance and the known effectiveness of surgery for their condition.
- To appropriately utilise diagnostic aids in the diagnosis and the treatment planning process.
- To advise patients on benefits, potential risks and complications of invasive treatments and lead the informed-consent process and support material, for example, patient literature.
- To prescribe non-surgical treatment where appropriate, including injection therapy, drug therapy, and referral to musculoskeletal practitioners.
- To admit and be responsible for the care of surgical patients up to the point of discharge, including management of post-operative complications
- To work collaboratively with the theatre teams to ensure the safe running of operating theatre lists.
- To administer and have advanced knowledge of local anaesthesia and regional anaesthetic techniques.
- To have knowledge of preoperative sedation techniques.
- To perform surgical procedures of the foot and its related structures on patients. Specifically this will include rearfoot osteotomies, fusions, tendon transfers, complex foot deformity correction and surgery to the Achilles tendon and ankle ligaments.
- To be responsible for the management of escalated occurrences of post-operative pain for podiatric service patients.
- To prescribe and administer prescription- only drug treatment, including analgesics, antibiotics and corticosteroid medication
- To review post-op progress, advise on rehabilitation and provide timely interventions in managing complications.
- To be responsible for the appropriate management of all post-operative complications for podiatric service patients.
- To be available for telephone only on-call duties until 9.30pm on day of surgery.
